Pen Type-A® is an homage to our favorite writing utensil, the Hi-Tec-C. We had been using this pen in its plastic housing for years, until we decided that these coveted cartridges deserved a more durable home.

A balance of simplicity, precision and substance, all parts of this pen are machined from solid, stainless steel.

Available in a black cerakote, a ceramic polymer coating. Even though this coating is durable, over time it will wear and reveal the stainless steel underneath, giving it kind of a rugged feel.

Also available with a custom laser engraving.

The deep wells in the cylinders and the square sleeves are painstakingly drilled out from a solid block with a gun drill. This machine uses high pressure oil pumped to the cutting edge of a specialized bit to slowly drill out a perfectly straight and deep well.

The clean and smooth cylindrical pen slides neatly into its sleeve, held in by a magnet once in its final position.

You’ll note a slight popping sound when removing it from its sheath—the effect of high tolerances creating a pneumatic seal, much like a piston.

There is no visible branding on the surface of Pen Type-A®. However, hidden under the coin screw is our tiny CW&T inscription. (Just in case you or your grandkids want to figure out where it came from.) Shown here on the sleeve is an example of a custom engraving you can add to your order.

The stepped geometry of the tip leaves the contact point exposed, so you can see what you are drawing. It is perfect for architects, illustrators, and designers. Inside the ruler sleeve is a stepped area keeping the super fine tip gently rested against a silicon pad.

SPECIAL THANKS : A Kickstarter Story

PEN TYPE-A® was made possible by the support of 4,049 superstar individuals. Our campaign to launch the pen as a real product was successfully crowd-funded on August 15, 2011 making it the 6th most funded project on Kickstarter at the time.

Over 6,000 pens were made in China over the course of our first year of manufacturing. We now make PEN TYPE-A® at a precision machine shop in Vermont, USA.

THANK YOU!

Great feeling

This is a really nice pen. It feels great and invites you to create and think. the engraving on the ruled pen is a bit underwhelming as it is not engraved because of the available area for the engraving and it looks more like a laser print and not engraved. aside from that the pen feels great and it writes really nice. I would like it better if blue in was available upon ordering. I have too many black ink for other pen I would not use and I hate wasting pens like that, but I just love blue ink. Overall I would not recommend engraving the scale pen sleeves.

Amazingly machined heirloom pen

It has such a good weight to it, lovely matte finish. Love the sharp edges and functional ruler. I was shocked at how precise and thin the default pen cartridge is. I'm definitely always smiling when I draw with this pen. Also big shoutout to the customer service, I had an issue and the care I received was fantastic!!

Amazing quality and attention to detail!

Bought the Pen Type-B first, in brass, and absolutely loved that pen! Well, seeing the Pen Type-A, I figured I’d love it just as much, and I do! The amazing attention to detail and excellent machine work make this pen well worth it. It will outlive me!

Pen Type - A

I've previously purchased Pen Type B and C which I have used and loved but have since given away to family members. I use a small straight edge for drawing so Pen Type A fit the bill perfectly. It's a wonderful pen and should last a long time. Thanks CW&T.
