The Pursuit of Stillness

12/2008

In an empty lobby, smoke-like swirls of light creep from the edges of undulating Corian furniture. When a visitor is present, the light retracts back into the furniture, emerging again once there is stillness.

The Pursuit of Stillness is an interactive projection designed for Acconci Studio‘s Corian Furniture Installation in the lobby of the Bronx Museum of the Arts. Acconci’s installation is part of year long series celebrating the Centennial Year of the Grand Concourse.

The software was written using Open Frameworks with openCV with Optical Flow. The application controls 25 high speed video loops, each mapped to a trigger position on the floor. The slow motion footage used in the projections was shot using a Casio Exilim EX-FH20 and the camera tracking uses an overhead PS3 camera.
