The Blockhead Stem IB is our Blockhead Stem with an integrated brake lever. The lever is tucked neatly into the stem and is just long enough for two fingers. We designed it to be used with a front brake so the cable can be cut really short and straight, eliminating friction within the brake cable housing.
Sometimes it’s nice to ride fixed with a front brake, but brake levers tend to be massive, take up a lot of handlebar space, and have levers that are much longer than they need to be. Our solution is to make the lever part of the stem. If you despise your ugly massive brake lever, this one is for you.
We ride with these on our bikes all around NYC. We love them.
If you have a 31.8mm handlebar or a 1″ steerer or some other configuration we don’t offer yet, let us know. If we get enough people that want a particular combination, we’ll build them to suit your setup. Or better yet, take the 3d files, customize it, and machine it yourself.

Plans to make a right side lever for us leftie polo players?
What are stupid product. It’s perfect though, for the brainless hipster crowd. Thanks for your efforts to dumb down society even more.
We don’t have plans to, but if you want one, let us know and we’ll make a special order for you in our next run.
The link for the AutoCAD file is not working. Can you guys send the 3D file to my email?
Guys the 3D CAD file seems dodgy. Is it zipped or just a plain ‘step’ file?
AS for that 2nd comment, you’re a W@nker, BAAAD! You’ll wish you had a brake after you’re first accident with a car.
Good question, Robin: What are stupid product?
looks like a really painful accident waiting to happen
this is an awesome design! I’m always annoyed at the space my lever takes up on my bars since i like to hold really close to the stem.
the 3D file link just comes up as not found. could you send it to me directly as well please?
Sorry for the broken link. A bunch of 3D formats are now available here. We use the .stp files to fabricate these, so we don’t know how reliable the other formats will be.
trying to open the 3DM file, but says it was created with a “newer version of RHINO.”
are you guys using WIP 5.0?
can you make a Ver 4 SR7 file available?
cheers!
yes. we’re using 5.0.
4.0 version uploaded. http://drop.io/blockheadstemib
would it be possible for me to purchase a blockhead stem, I live in the Netherlands. I can pay with a creditcard or PayPal.
Best regards,
Simon wilkinson.
We just added Netherlands to the list. You can purchase the stem through our site and pay with credit or Paypal. Thanks!
Hi, I’d love a Blockhead Stem IB, but I have a vintage 853 frame with a 1″ steerer. Do let me know if you do a 1″.
Many thanks
We will make some for 1″ steerers in our next batch of Blockheads.
hey i would like a one inch with out the break??? is it doable?
merci
Hey is the inventory count automatic? Is it sold out?
yup, it’s automatic. We have about 17 in stock at this moment.
Nice work !
I realy enjoy!
keep going
Thanks! and you too! congrats on your bike design at velo expo!
This is the ugliest stem I’ve ever seen and am ever likely to see. If you’re a tasteless, hipster spastic, it might just be for you.
Hi Johnny,
The design isn’t for everyone, but we didn’t realize it would be so offensive. We value all comments so please let us know what you found offensive. Hopefully you won’t run into any uglier stems in the future.
Thanks again for visiting the site.

Does this stem come in black? I would love to have one in black!
nice idea.how about a blockhead-stem with front&rear levers?the shorter the bar the better the lanesplitting……… i believe in braking it saves ass.
Hi Paddy. Thanks for the feedback. We’ll take a look at a new design in the new year!
Ok – I really like this concept a lot. I am definitely not a fan of the aesthetic (or non-aesthetic) of a cube as a stem – since 90% of bikes are designed with flowing, curvi-linear styling and “aerodynamic” construction (especially the bikes this is proposed to be used on), but the incorperation of a brake into a stem is a great idea, and more than makes up for its pretty ugly look (no offense). I dont feel that brake levers are that bulky or “massive” when compared to this thing. It looks like it might weigh more than a stem and brake lever. But, hey, maybe ill make my own, and send you pics.
I am very impressed, that you are offering it to the creative commons.
Obviously, you needent listen to idiots writing about this being stupid, because it clearly is not. They are.
Robin, Im curious, how does this “dumb society down”?
And how should people taste, Johnny Crash?
Hey Guys, amazing idea. I tend to switch bars a lot, so no more fiddling with bartape or different diameter lever clamps would be so so great!I just found this webpage and would love to make my own stem . Only thing is none of the files seem to work or even open a site..
Could you sort that out or maybe send a link via email?
That’d be much appreciated.
Sascha
so the idea is to trade your “ugly massive brake lever” for an ugly massive stem?
pretty much!
i can’t download the 3D files. Link seems broken :(
Hi, where can I find the 3D files?
The link is not working.
Thanks.
right click on [blkhdstm001.stp] and select save as. The file format is a STEP file.
do you send your product to malaysia
i really want one!
Yes we do!
While I can’t sacrifice my quill stem for this clunky block (no offense, just personal taste) I do think the integrated lever is genius. Even if this product is not for everyone, I appreciate the fact that it questions conventional bicycle designs, and how mechanical needs often trump comfort and aesthetics. Good luck to you in your visual experiments.
I can’t get a copy of the 3D file. There is one old link below but it doesn’t have the Brake lever…. :(
Nevermind! I got it from the description above! thanks! I’m gonna try making one at my shop :D
Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is important and everything.
Nevertheless imagine if you added some great pictures or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”!
Your content is excellent but with pics and video clips, this blog could undeniably be one of
the most beneficial in its field. Terrific blog!
What brand is the handlebar shown in the photo?
the bull horns are by Nitto. The black straight handlebar is a just a aluminum tube from the hardware store.
